Using custom labels in your campaign structure

The five label slots, common labelling schemes and how Komplet publishes labels without touching your feed.

The five slots

Every product may carry five custom labels, custom_label_0 to custom_label_4, each up to 100 characters. Shoppers never see them; they exist so that you can group products in Google Ads. One value per slot per product.

Common labelling schemes

  • Margin band (high / medium / low): bid higher where the margin allows it.
  • Price position (below / at / above benchmark): bid up on competitive products, hold back on expensive ones.
  • Seasonality (winter / summer / all-year): seasonal budgets.
  • Stock depth (deep / low): avoid pushing products about to sell out.
  • Sales tier (bestseller / long tail): separate campaigns and budgets.

Using them in Google Ads

  • Shopping campaigns: in the Product groups view subdivide "All products" by Custom label 0–4 and set bids or exclusions per group.
  • Performance Max: in the Listing groups of an asset group, subdivide by Custom label to include or exclude products.
  • Campaign priorities and budgets then let you fund the groups differently.

How Komplet publishes labels

  • Komplet never edits your primary feed. Labels assigned by a tool go into the hosted supplemental feed; once that feed is linked in Merchant Center, Google merges the label into the product after its next fetch (see the article Adding the Komplet supplemental feed in Merchant Center).
  • Each tool page states which slot it writes; Price Position, for example, defaults to custom_label_3 and lets you change it. Keep tool slots different from the slots your own feed fills, because a supplemental value overrides the primary one for the same product.
  • Product groups in Google Ads refer to the label value, so keep values stable ("margin-high", not a number that changes daily). After a label changes in Merchant Center, Google Ads picks it up within hours.
